High water barrier at the Rhine

Current Status of Rhine Shipping: Impact of High Water Levels

Over the past weekend, heavy rainfall has caused significant rises in the water levels of the Rhine and its tributaries. This situation has had far-reaching effects on shipping and logistics in the region.

High Water Levels and Closures

As early as Friday, May 31, 2024, meteorologists warned of the impending heavy rains. The resulting water masses have led to substantial rises in water levels, especially in the Rhine and its tributaries. For instance, Lake Constance’s water level rose by nearly 60 cm in just a few days.

As a direct consequence of this development, Rhine shipping is currently completely closed between Basel and Mannheim. Further sections of the Rhine, particularly between Mannheim and Kaub, are expected to be closed by the night of Tuesday, June 4, 2024.

Forecasts and Further Developments

Heavy rainfall is again forecasted today for the Upper Rhine and other Rhine catchment areas. These weather forecasts make it challenging to predict accurately when Rhine shipping can resume in the various sections.

Outlook

Please note that all information is provided without guarantee. When Rhine shipping resumes, longer waiting times at the locks are expected, as only one lock chamber is in operation at several locks. We will keep you updated and thank you for your understanding in this exceptional situation.
